Norman Podhoretz

Norman Podhoretz, né le 16 janvier 1930 à Brownsville, quartier pauvre de Broklyn, de Julius Podhoretz et d'Helen Woliner, est l'un des plus connus des intellectuels néo-conservateurs américains.
Marié en 1956 à Midge Decter (http://rightweb.irc-online.org/profile/1114) dont il a eu un fils - l'éditorialiste John Podhoretz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Podhoretz) - et trois filles, il est le père de et le beau-père d’Elliott Abrams (http://rightweb.irc-online.org/profile/969), en charge du Proche-Orient au Conseil de sécurité nationale, qui a épousé sa fille Rachel.
Norman Podhoretz est surtout connu pour avoir été, de 1960 à 1995, le Rédacteur en chef du très influent mensuel Commentary.
Le 23 juin 2004, il a reçu la Presidential Medal of Freedom (http://www.medaloffreedom.com/NormanPodhoretz.htm), la plus haute distinction que l'Etat américain puisse décerner à un civil.

Education
Norman Podhoretz a été élevé dans une famille de gauche - sa soeur aînée s'était même embrigadée dans un mouvement de jeunesses socialistes.
Norman Podhoretz a reçu une licence ès lettres de l'Université de Columbia (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universit%C3%A9_de_Columbia) où il avait étudié comme Boursier Pulitzer avec Lionel Trilling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lionel_Trilling), ainsi que du Jewish Theological Seminary (http://www.jtsa.edu/) en littérature hébraïque.
Puis, ayant reçu une Bourse Fulbright (http://www.nndb.com/honors/188/000045053/), il a reçu une licence et une maîtrise de lettres avec mention de l'Université de Cambridge (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universit%C3%A9_de_Cambridge).
En 1967, il s'est fait connaître par un essai intitulé : “My Negro Problem - And Ours."
Il est Docteur Honoris Causa de Hamilton College, du Jewish Theological Seminary, de la Yeshiva University, de Boston University, et d'Adelphi University.
Carrière
Norman Podhoretz a servi dans l'US Army de 1953 à 1955. Jusqu'en 1960 il a occupé divers postes de rédacteur et d'éditeur.
De 1981 à 1987, il était Président du New Directions Advisory Committee de l' U.S. Information Agency, notamment chargé de superviser la Voix de l'Amérique.
De 1960 à sa retraite en 1995, Norman Podhoretz a été Rédacteur en chef du mensuel Commentary publié par l' American Jewish Committee (http://www.ajc.org/site/c.ijITI2PHKoG/b.685761/k.CB97/Home.htm).
De1995 à 2003 il a été Senior Fellow du Hudson Institute (http://www.hudson.org/).
